I have been asked to write an article about “Justice”, SBIS CH Gazon The Truth Be Told. I have asked a few others to contribute to this as well.
Justice was born on Feb 28, 1997. He is a blue brindle domino out of Chevy ( CH Gazon Say What You Mean) X Snappy (CH Qamari Airs Above The Ground). We was bred by Debbie and Jym Webb (Gazon Kennels) and whelped by Julie Roche (Qamari Kennels). He spent the first 2 ½ years with the Webbs. I am Beth Collins, and here is our story……
I remember the first time I saw Justice. The date was May 29, 1999 at the Afghan Hound Club of Southwestern Ohio Specialty. Mr Gill Ullom was judging, and Justice was entered in the open class. I had made the long trip from Maine to Cincinnati to show Haley, Justice’s litter sister.
When I arrived at the grounds and saw him for the first time, my eyes became glued to this magnificent dog! He was being gaited by Holly Jorgenson (Hounds in Concert). I was so taken by his presence and that MOVEMENT! Anyone who has ever seen Justice moving knows exactly what I am referring to. I stopped dead in my tracks, my jaw dropped open and I turned to my husband, Tom. I said to him “Now that is my idea of an Afghan Hound! I have just got to own this dog and you will not stop me!” I don’t think he knew quite what to say, but later tells me that he, too, was captivated.
I asked to go over him…and my hands immediately went to his massive forechest. The more I felt, the more I liked! The headpiece was just lovely to look at, set on that long, strong neck and the body felt so good to go over. Here was this domino dog…he peaked my curiosity so…I kept waiting to find what I didn’t like, but it just wasn’t to be! I then went to Debbie and Jym Webb and said “I just must have this dog!” They laughed, and said they knew that I would like him. I said I was dead serious, and they agreed to talk more after judging. (I had 2 Gazon dogs at the time;the young Gazon Quitchabitchin and CH Gazon Rumour Has It, so we knew each other quite well.)
As the dog judging began, I can honestly say that I was as excited that day as I was at any of the Nationals or specialties since. I knew that this was the dog that I had waited for, and, even though he was not mine, I felt that I had discovered the jewel I had been in search of for many years. When Justice went around the ring with Holly, by heart stopped and I allowed the moment to be indelibly etched in my memory. He showed flawlessly and won WD and BOW …his first.
Afterwards, I talked with the Webbs. I know there was no doubt in their minds that I would provide a good home for Justice, as they had sent dogs with me previously, but a dog like that is hard to part with. What turned out to be a deciding factor was that Justice did not get along with Jym Webb, and Debbie was unable to show dogs at the time.(It seems that Jym had made the mistake of being the one to lead break the very stubborn Justice, a deed that he would never forgive him for!)
It took me all four days of that holiday weekend…with no sleep at all…to talk them into it and finally, word came down that they made the decision to send Justice with me. I am sure that they had a few good laughs over my obsession that weekend! The arrangements were made to send Justice to his new home and life after the Milwaukee specialty, where Jym was going to try his hand at showing him again. Justice must have decided to cooperate with Jym, because he again was WD and BOW at that specialty under Raphael Santiago for his 2nd specialty major.
Justice joined us in Maine that year in early November. I started showing him on Nov. 13th and finished him on Nov. 26th with a third major. I gave him a few months of rest and then I started specialing him. He began accumulating breed wins and group placements and wins. He started with a few specialty BOS, always to the incomparable Izzy! You can only guess how pleased we were when we eventually went SBIS OVER Izzy!
He then went to his first National in Florida in 2000 under Breeder Judge Jan Reital (Tifarah Afghans), where we received an Award of Merit. While being presented with the ribbon, an excited Judge Reital asked, “Who is this dog and what country is he from?” From that day on, “Justice” became a recognized name, and he started being presented with nice bitches to breed. We continued to get our breed and group wins, traveling mainly in the northeastern USA.
The following year, I was unable to take Justice to the 2001 National Specialty Show in Houston, Texas, so I enlisted the help of Jan Swayze (Longlesson Afghans) to show him under Betsy Hufnagle. Debbie Webb was there to oversee his care (and to provide a bed to sleep on!) and Kathryn Carr (Kaimar Afghans) was going to bathe and groom him to perfection. Jan laughed as she recounted to me the moment when she first saw who she would be showing. She had no idea it would be a dog with such a strong chance of winning the National, so, needless to say, she was excited and pleased. As luck would have it, while Justice was in front and the decision was about to be made, the Judge decided on one more look. Justice chose this time to be naughty. Instead of our hopes of winning National Specialty Best in Show, he came home with another Award of Merit.
After that day, Jan was hooked on the challenge of the naughty dog and expressed a strong desire to continue showing Justice. I was in Maine raising our 2 daughters and running my own business. I was tied down and could not travel the way she could, so it was decided to give it a try. Jan went on to show him to multiple SBIS wins (the first, ironically, was the Southwest Ohio Specialty, where I first saw him) and many group wins. He was ranked as high as number one and stayed in the top 5 continuously throughout his show career. I will also mention that he was co owned with the Webbs and Dr Patricia Edwards at this time. When not on the road, he was a house dog with the Swayzes. Jan’s father and mother would never miss the opportunity to tell me what a ‘gentleman’ he was!
Justice was BOS to Izzy at the Zion National Specialty in 2002 under Sandy Frei (Stormhill Afghans) and 1st Award of Merit under Eugene Blake at the Rhode Island National in 2003. This was his retirement show, and I had the privilege to handle him once again. His role has changed now, and he is leaving the rest up to his kids. He was Best Stud dog at the 2004 National in St Cloud, Minnesota., while his kids won most of their classes and a son was RWD.
Now, at 8 1/2 years old, he is enjoying his retirement life here in Minnesota with our family. He has no demands placed on him. I do, however, have demands placed on me! Justice has proven himself to be an extraordinary stud dog. His get include 2 SBIS winners, many specialty major winners, Group winners, a Breeders Cup winner, multiple Specialty Best in Sweeps winners, a Mexican BIS winner, Best puppy at the Canadian National, American National Specialty Best in Sweeps winner, and many Champions of record…in the USA, Canada, Korea and Mexico. He currently has puppies on the ground in Germany at Scent-of-Fame kennels (Alexandra and Claus Schütz) and breedings approved in England, South Africa and Mexico.
Because he has proven himself to be such a fabulous producer, we get many, many requests for breeding. We are very particular as to our requirements: We expect the bitch to be hips-and-eyes certified, thyroid–tested normal and brucellosis testing negative. We review pedigrees and scrutinize the bitches’ qualities to give us the best chances for producing the kind of quality we are looking for. It is always difficult to play with nature, and we must be particular. It is sometimes necessary to turn away bitches that we just don’t think would be a right combination with Justice.
Justice seems very strong in passing on great fronts with lots of forechest and return of upper arm., pretty headpieces with nice detailing, nicely shaped dark eyes and long necks. Briskets are deep, toplines are typically strong and loins short.
Justice’s best strength is his undeniable movement. He is effortless and covers ground with lift and ease, so speed is of no consequence to him. He could go all day, with air beneath his feet. He is like poetry in motion, as described by many. Importantly, Justice seems to pass on outstanding movement to his kids, with many excellent movers coming down from him.
Of course, what is behind Justice is probably more important than what he is. With the amazing stud dog force behind him, including Chevy (BIS Multi CH Gazon Say What You Mean), Killer (CH Jorogz Heartbreaker), Drifter (SBIS CH Persia’s Sandrift), Jason (SBIS CH Abashagh Mahabarata), CH Mecca’s Falstaff, Taco (BIS CH Palhavi Puttin On The Ritz), Teddy (CH Suraj Rhythm and Blues), Cody (CH Pahlavi Rythm Of The Night), and CH Coastwind Abraxas among others. Add to this the strong bitches and producers Snappy (CH Qamari Airs Above the Ground), Fawn (CH Legends The White Doe), Weebee (CH Gazon’w Sound of Snowflakes), Peaches (CH Wildenau’s Sweet Antiquity), Pixie (CH Sahiba Sudden Silver), Jim (CH Coastwind Axintra) and her sister Basket (Coastwind Axtecsy) and CH Qamari’s Charming Alibi…It is no surprise that Justice is producing as well as he is.

He now has champion-producing grandkids and we are very excited to take our next step in the journey. Here at Taza, in conjunction with Kaimar and Persia, we have 3 week old puppies out of Justice’s Breeders Cup winning daughter, AM CAN CH Taza Kaimar Element Of Truth and the incomparable CH Persia’s Sandrift.
These two boys are the first Drifter offspring in almost 15 years. And it is a strong line breeding done on Drifter.
Justice’s littermates have also proven themselves in both the show ring and in the whelping box. Champion littermates include:
AM CH Gazon Countrywinds Paper Dali “Dali”
AM CH Gazon Windance Wild Tornado “Turner:”
NZ CH Gazon It’s the Real Thing “Coke” sire of 9 NZ Champions
NZ CH Gazon Little Snow Cloud “Cloudy”
On a personal note, when not totally obsessing over the toy of the day (even holding it in his mouth during his weekly baths), Justice is most comfortable just being near us, running the yard like a youngster and hanging with his friends here at Taza. He loves his all too infrequent visits with the Webbs and Jan Swayze…as he never forgets someone he loves! When a visitor comes to the house, he is sure they are here to see him, and he makes sure he is available for all the attention they have to give.
It has been a privilege, an honor and a huge responsibility to the breed to own such a unique, wonderful and influential afghan hound. I have enjoyed every minute of it!
